A girl I graduated with just shared an image from a page that was just text that read, “Duct tape: Turning ‘No! No!’ into ‘MMPH! MMPH!’ since 1943.” I sat there and debated if I should comment or not because we used to be pretty good friends but have drifted apart and blah blah blah. But after reading the post I reblogged regarding rape jokes the other day, I couldn’t not comment. I informed her of statistically how many males on her friends have raped/sexually assaulted someone and that by joking about it, we confirm for those men that it is normal and acceptable to act in such a way. I also reminded her that there are people on her friends who have been sexually assaulted who are being discouraged to tell others because of the way society has come to portray rape (something to joke about, victim-blaming, etc.) and within a minute of me posting the comment, she had deleted the image.
It’s a very small accomplishment in the grand scheme of things but I was expecting a full-blown Facebook debate/argument.
EDIT: She even messaged me and apologized for not thinking when she posted the image.
